Planning for Kids When Your Parents Also Need Support

The sandwich generation carries a lot. A starting point for families balancing elder care and young kids.

Name the load

Financial support, medical appointments, translation, housing decisions, emotional mediation — elder care takes many forms. Acknowledging the full scope helps you plan realistically.

Talk with siblings and partners

Caregiving often falls unevenly — especially on daughters and geographically closest children. Have explicit conversations about division of labor, even when uncomfortable.

Protect your nuclear family's needs

It's possible to honor parents while maintaining boundaries. Your kids need stability too. Guilt is common; it's not a directive.

Seek community and professional support

Adult day programs, home health aides, caregiver support groups, and culturally competent social workers exist in many metro areas. You don't have to do this alone.

Plan financially — when you can

Elder care costs can be significant. If possible, discuss finances with parents early, explore insurance and benefits, and build buffer into your family budget.
